How to Blog without Making Noise

Blogging has become so accessible that now anyone can join in. The sometimes frustrating side of this coin, however, is that...now anyone can join in.

Not everyone can do it well, though. And like a lot of other things in competitive areas, there's a certain degree of natural selection at work, where those who produce average content get overlooked, and those who can deliver something remarkable gradually get nudged to the top.

So what makes for remarkable content?
For starters, you'll have to offer something new. At every turn, you will be tempted to write the same thing you've written before but from a different angle. Our advice is to avoid that wherever possible. It's hard; we know. But if your strategy calls for blogging twice a week and you just can't scrape up something new and interesting for your second post, skip it.

As you've probably heard us say before, when it comes to content, delivering something poorly is often worse than holding back altogether. We've said this in regards to other forms of social media, and it's just as relevant to blogging.

Write Strong, Write Consistently
If you're in the habit of blogging for your business at the beginning of every week, but find yourself stuck in a dry spot for a few days, wait until you have something valuable to say and publish it later in the week. You're audience is likely to forgive you for making them wait a bit longer.

What they probably won't overlook, though, are a couple of consecutive boring posts. That's when you jeopardize the reader base you've worked so hard to build up. It's also when you officially become part of the noise in the blogosphere.

It's important to seek the best balance of frequency and quality your blog can achieve, and ideally, you'll be delivering content that hits both targets every time. If you must sacrifice one, make sure it's not the quality of your work.

Blogging is one of several tools that can be used to give your business or organization a competitive edge in your field. If you're ready to talk more about how it can be used in concert with other on-site and off-site search engine marketing strategies, let us know.
