Online Sales, Especially From Mobile Devices, See Increase

It should come as little surprise that more sales each year, especially during the holiday shopping season, are taking place online. But the extent of that trend remains newsworthy, bolstered by statistics that show strong increases in ecommerce purchases.

Adding to the buzz is a new report from IBM showing that online sales on Christmas day alone rose 16.4 percent compared to the same day last year. What's also exciting to note, though, is how much of that online buying was made using mobile devices.

Online purchasing using mobile devices like iPads, other tablets, and smartphones on Christmas day showed an increase of 173% over last year. This trend was also seen again yesterday, the day after Christmas.

Recession or not, shoppers still like to spend money. And because of recent leaps mobile technology has made, those with money burning holes in their pockets have another vehicle for spending it: their phones and tablets.

What Does This Mean For Me?

If you're not selling your products and services online, have you considered your reasons lately? For many organizations, adding an e-commerce component to their website is a significant move, but it's often simpler than business owners might realize.

The next question, then, concerns your mobile customers. Do you know how many people try to access your website each day using their smartphones and iPads? (Hint: Google Analytics will tell you for free.) What are you doing to capture those interested customers, and are you actively making it easier for them to spend money at your site?
